The American Scholar by Ralph Waldo Emerson

I have said many times in my life that history teaches us how to behave, act and live in a more ethical and conscience manner if we pay attention.  So I went back to my college literature books and I found my favorite oration given my Ralph Waldo Emerson to the Phi Beta Kappa Society at Cambridge on August 31, 1837 and I found this specific line so befitting our world today:

“In the right state he is Man Thinking.  In the degenerate state, when the victim of society, he tends to become a mere thinker, or still worse, the parrot of other men’s thinking.”
